Hi Chris, I'm very sorry about your mom. She made the right decision about the feeding tube, considering her circumstances. But yes, swallowing can be a huge issue in a number of late stage diseases. Many people are doing fairly well except for the swallowing problems so pureed food is the next step. As you can imagine, this can make for some unappealing food. Therefore, knowledge is power when it comes to preparation. Still, there comes a time for many when even purees can't be swallowed. Each situation is different so I try to address different options. Thanks for posting this article on Dysphagia. My mom died a couple of years ago from complications due to pneumonia. She stopped swallowing during treatment and could never regain her ability to do so. At age 89 she chose not to insert an NG tube. I didn't realize how important and difficult it is to swallow when one is that ill!
