Changing Thought Process to Improve Elder Care

I've been enjoying the posts on a great deal. A new post titled "Principles of the “New Aging” movement" is, in my opinion, particularly timely.

You'll want to read the full post, however what caught my eye the most was that the author points out the difference between "new thinking" in the work place (or what we'd all like to be the "new thinking"). He extrapolates from this to "new aging." I think we'd all like to see these points taken into consideration as we care for our seniors now - and as we, ourselves, age and need care. The points?

  • Collaboration: People want to have a say in how the things they are involved in are structured.
  • Content: People want what they do to have meaning, or meaningful content.
  • Choice: People want to have control over the when, where, and how of what they are meant to do.

The post begins:

"It’s occurred to more than a few people that Baby Boomers, or what I’m increasingly wanting to call the “new aging”, are going to be the tidal force that will change how societies around the globe are going to deal with issues ranging from health care to housing and all other points on the compass. For example, although these ideas have been talked about for years, notions like “aging in place” and “universal design” (just to pick two) will gain lots more currency in the next twenty years."
